Master’s degree : music, research and ensemble practices
Presentation
Program
The University of Poitiers, in partnership with RésoNAnces and the Abbaye aux Dames de Saintes, is accredited to award a university Master’s degree in Music, specializing in “Research and Ensemble Performance”.
This program prepares students to develop a personal musical and artistic approach that aligns with current evolutions in professions, artistic practices, and methodologies.
It leads to a University Master’s Degree awarded by the University of Poitiers:
- Degree: Master’s Degree (Master)
- Field of Study: Musicology
- Track / Specialization: Music: Research and Ensemble Performance
Objectives
The primary objectives of this program are:
- To establish a close integration between musicological research and artistic practices.
- To offer an in-depth study of core musical repertoires.
- To prepare students for successful integration into the professional world.
The academic component of the curriculum is delivered by the musicology department of University of Poitiers. It is structured around seminars, standard courses, and individualized academic supervision.
University courses are taught by faculty members (tenured professor-researchers) from the musicology department as well as guest researchers.
The artistic and practical component of the training is managed and delivered by RésoNAnces.
Structure and duration
Please note: teaching units 1 and 2 (UE1 and UE2, see below) form a common core shared with the Master’s degree in Music and Human Sciences (Musique et sciences humaines – MSH), jointly offered by the University of Poitiers and the University of Tours. Classes are held either in-person at one of the two campus cities, or via remote learning.
UE3 is fully handled by RésoNAnces, with all classes taking place in Poitiers.
To accommodate students, common core seminars are grouped into consecutive two-day sessions. This format minimizes travel requirements and specifically allows students enrolled in the “Music: Research and Ensemble Performance” track (MRPE) to simultaneously maintain their professional activities as performing musicians and/or educators.
In their first year (M1), students from both Poitiers and Tours complete 48 hours per semester (equivalent to 6 days) of coursework at the partner university. In their second year (M2), this requirement is adjusted to 24 hours per semester (equivalent to 4 days).
